Butte College is excited to announce it has selected Dr. Rebecca Berner as its new dean of student success services. Dr. Berner has a proven track record of building student success, support and transition programs. She has more than 20 years of experience in student services and academic affairs.
Before accepting the dean position, Dr. Berner served in that role in an interim capacity since January of 2022. She joined Butte College in March of 2021 as a grants manager to relaunch Butte's TRIO SSS, a program providing student-centered educational support services for first-generation and low-income students, and students with disabilities. From 2000 to 2021, Dr. Berner worked at CSU, Chico in various student life and student services positions, and as an instructor.
Dr. Berner earned a Doctorate of Educational Leadership from CSU, Sacramento. Her dissertation, “Transfer Shock and the Experience of Community College Students Transitioning to California State University, Chico: An Exploratory Study,” earned the outstanding dissertation award. Dr. Berner has demonstrated a deep passion for student access and success in her research and career.
"I believe wholeheartedly in the open access mission of the community college – higher education truly opens doors," said Dr. Berner. "I feel very blessed and excited to continue to help our students transform their lives and realize their dreams."
Dr. Berner steps into this role at a pivotal time for the college when it has refocused its efforts to increase student retention and success. The programs under Dr. Berner's leadership are essential to removing barriers and dismantling inequities many of our students face. "I believe Dr. Berner's successful history of building and managing student-centered programs is what's needed to move this work forward," said President Virginia Guleff.
